Indian mobile services market to reach $21.4 billion in 2015: Gartner
As per a Gartner Inc. report, mobile connections in India will grow to 880 million in 2015, an increase of 5 percent from 837 million connections in 2014. Spending on mobile services will grow 4 percent to reach $21.4 billion in 2015. This spent will be driven by data services, which is expected to grow 15 percent to reach $6.5 billion in 2015. A large chunk of this growth will be due to the increasing use of cellular services on data-centric devices, such as tablets and notebooks, through either embedded cellular modems or USB sticks.
Newer and faster networks, rise in the number of users of these networks, and more affordable smartphones will help to increase spends on data services. In addition, apps and video content will drive traffic volume as people increasingly chat with friends & family, watch videos on the move, and listen to streamed music.
Indian smartphone market soars in second quarter of 2015
According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, 26.5 million smartphones were shipped to India in the second quarter of 2015, up 44 percent from 18.4 million units for the same period last year. This strong second quarter performance saw smartphone shipments grow by 19 percent, following a sluggish first quarter.
The growth in the smartphone market was helped by vendors using online retail. According to Kiran Kumar, research manager with IDC’s India Mobile Phone team, “e-tailers have opened additional avenues for growth of vendors in India, who would have otherwise struggled to get a hold in the complex distribution network.”
