Still early days of AI, real potential to come in place in 10-20 years: Pichai

Confident that artificial intelligence will play a much bigger role in tackling future pandemics, Sundar Pichai

Confident that artificial intelligence will play a much bigger role in tackling future pandemics, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, said on Friday that these are still the beginnings of AI and that its real potential will come into play in 10-20 years.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s virtual Davos agenda summit, he said COVID-19 itself has been a moment of reflection.

“Even though you see the horrible impact in the world, you also see the role that technology plays in making the economy work around the world. The development of the vaccine is done on the basis of technological progress in the last decades, ”said Pichai.

When asked if AI could help with vaccine delivery, he said, “Today we have tools to help, IT, machine learning and algorithms. But these are still the beginnings of AI, and the real potential will kick in in 10 to 20 years.”

While there are countless examples of how AI has been able to ensure people received the right information about COVID-19, this pandemic is a hundred-year global event and AI does has not played a significant role in helping the world navigate. that, he said.

“AI will lay the groundwork to tackle future problems and it can play a much bigger role in tackling future pandemics,” he added.

Regarding public attitudes towards Big Tech, Pichai said there are real societal issues to be debated and what we need for a well-functioning society.

“I’m glad that there are conversations, including around potential regulatory approaches that would result in clearer rules of the road. Big tech companies have an important role and responsibility to make this happen, ”he said.

No country can solve a global problem on its own. Just like the world has the Paris Agreement to tackle climate change, countries need to come together to address larger, longer-term security challenges related to technologies like AI and quantum computing, did he declare.

“As technology advances with AI and quantum computing, we’re going to need additional frameworks like this to keep the planet safe,” he says.

When will quantum computing be available in a larger market, he said what can be seen over the next 3-5 years could be a “ quantum cloud ” for some companies and developers for s ” tackle the first research problems.

“But it’s at the start of the cycle, the potential is there, but we’re on a 10 to 20 year path to put it into practice,” he said.
